The construction detail is not even close between a Hot and an Ezzy!
Lets compare with a 2007n Smack:
1. Ezzy uses single sided plys, we use double sided plys
2. All the edges are raw on Ezzy, all our edges are folded under to prevent fraying.
3. We use fan patches at the clew, Ezzy does not.
4. We have kevlar rope on the leech to prevent catastrophic failure. There is nothing to stop an Ezzy tearing in half (and they do!)
5. We use a super heavy dacron in the foot where the sail takes the most abuse. It can be crushed without damaging the sail.
6. We use a heavy duty webbing mast sleeve front which is incredibly strong and prevents reef rash. We have seen huge wipeouts resulting in broken masts and the mast stays contained in the sleeve without tearing. Ezzy uses the same old easy to tear mast sleeve.
7. We use our new double diamond x-ply with Twaron yarns. It has a much wider angle between the yarns - 30 degrees vs 22. The Ezzy x-ply is prone to tearing. They use spectra in there yarn. Spectra will not laminate - nothing sticks to it! So to get spectra into the yarns they have to wrap it around the polyester yarns. This was developed for small boat racing sails where they are more worried about stretch than tearing. Effectively the x-ply is not fully laminated because of the spectra. it is like the cloth comes pre-delaminated! This means that if you get a small hole the spectra behaves like a cheese cutter and actually propagates tears.
8. Ezzy still uses "Mylar" in their patches which is a material notorious for de-lamination.
9. Ezzy batten tensions tension the wrong way and seize up so they can no longer be adjusted. We use a stainless steel screw with an 8mm allen key adjustment that never seizes and tightens the right way.
10. We use sailmakers leather as a chaffe gaurd on the mast sleeve top and ends of batten pockets.
I am sure there is much more. Just take an Ezzy and a Hot side by side and you will be able to see the difference.
